Pilates

Joseph Pilates (1883-1967) developed this system of exercises to rehabilitate himself at a young age. He was a German in England during World War I where he was held in an internment camp. It was his method, Contrology as he called it, that the guards used as a measure to keep all of the inmates healthy. They noticed that Pilates' unit did not have the illness and disease like the rest of the camp. Through practicing his specific exercises all of the men grew healthy.

When released from the camp, Pilates made his way to the United States with dreams of teaching his method. When he reached New York City, the only interested parties were dancers. It was with these dancers that his method flourished and developed. There was also a misconception Contrology was only for women, more specifically for dancers. Pilates meant for his method of Contrology to be practiced by all, and especially as a means to improve and maintain good health.

I had 2 herniated discs that needed surgery leaving my core weak with lingering pain. I not only wanted to relieve my pain but I wanted to be sure I would not need surgery again. Having had that surgery 20 years ago, and having practiced Pilates for the past 15, I do believe this method has kept my spine from needing another surgery.
